Phoning

For me, one of the scariest parts of my upcoming adventure to Cambodia is the sheer loneliness of the excursion. It's not just the fact that I'm traveling alone to a place where I don't know anyone, but the lack in communication methods that could help relieve my bouts of homesickness. (i.e. International cell phone charges would put a huge cramp in my budget.)

My solution to the foreseeable hindrance of connecting with friends and family while I'm abroad is Skype. For those who have never heard of Skype, it's a free web-based phone that you can download to your Mac or PC. To send instant messages and talk computer to computer is free, and for what I see as a reasonable charge, you can make computer to phone calls as well. This is a huge assurance that I can somehow reach my family if, god forbid, an emergency should arise.

I've already tested the software on the home front and it works beautifully. The sound is clear and feedback is immediate.

If those out there reading this want to set up a time to talk via Skype while I'm gone, send me an e-mail. It would be great to hear your voices.

How exciting that you are headed to Cambodia! Check with Prof. McDaniel in the Center for International Studies at OU. There are a number of OU contacts (and even former students) in Cambodia. A natural "network" for you to use while you are there. Prof. Stewart
