Pretty in Paisley

And the packing continues. Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll keep it all in mind.

This week, in addition to putting my life in boxes, I've been on the hunt for a good bedspread for my "apartment bedroom." I feel a good bedspread pretty much sets the tone of comfort for the whole room, so it's got to be something you love.

I really loved Crate and Barrel's Serena Paisley duvet cover. Fiery reds make me feel at home and my best friend bought me this awesome red elephant tapestry from India that would have complimented it perfectly.

I nearly splurged, but in the spirit of saving money, I decided to go with the Bohemian Luxe by Tommy Hilfiger that I found on sale at discount retailer Burlington Coat Factory.

It still has that funky paisley look and though it looks rather pinkish from the photo, warm red and yellow accents really make the details in the comforter pop. The Indian tapestry will still work and I can create a fun ambiance for my new home, all within a reasonable budget. Points scored.

What are your favorite ways to curb spending when making your house feel like home?

The thing I'm happiest I've done so far was making a necessities run at the dollar store before even starting to restock my kitchen. You can get lots of decent stuff -- cooking spoons and spatulas, centerpiece vessels, cleaning supplies, kitchen rags -- for dirt cheap, and the couple-dollar savings really add up, so you can splurge on stuff you really do love.

I also bought wicked cheap furniture from Craigslist and Goodwill and custom painted them and am making my own roman blinds (for so cheap!), so my furniture is customized to my desires and costs a lot less than it would in the store.

This is so exciting. It's like moving to college times ten because you don't have to worry about what your roommate wants to live with. It's all about you! I can't wait to come visit and see what you've done with the place!
