Not Your Typical Tom Turkey

If your idea of a grand November meal involves Tofurky and you have a soft spot in your heart for our poultry pals, then join me in celebrating "Adopt-a-Turkey" month.

Ok, so maybe I'm not quite willing to skimp on tradition this Thanksgiving, but the folks at Farm Sanctuary have their hearts in the right place. In support of "localized fooding," as I like to call it -- that is, thumbs up for local farms and thumbs down for food factories -- they are encouraging turkey lovers to adopt a commercially raised turkey and support its placement into a humane home.

Also behind this project, the Farm encourages us consumers to examine our meat-eating habits and search for "free-range," "organic," and "natural" turkey to place on the table this holiday season. If you have been waiting for your excuse to jump on the green bandwagon, November just might be your month.

On a side note, did you know that our country didn't celebrate a day of thanks for 60 years because of Thomas Jefferson's anti-monarchical beliefs? Read more about the history of Thanksgiving here.

(Can you tell I'm excited about Turkey Day? Might as well get an early start...)

wow, I was just reading about how to grow your own free range turkeys... (a strange reading topic, actually, now that I think about it...).
You may like reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Baraba Kingsolver. It's all about stuff like this.
